Pfizer Shots May Soon be Administered in Some Pharmacies

The province is considering a pilot project to allow some pharmacies to administer Pfizer vaccines.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the province is looking into how to handle storage and transportation requirements to bring doses to "several" pharmacies.

While pharmacies have been administering AstraZeneca doses to people 40 and older, supply of the vaccine remains uncertain.

The government says there are about 337,000 AstraZeneca doses left, and no new shipments are expected until next month.

Elliott also says the province may allow half of its vaccines to be sent to hot spot once more Pfizer doses come in.

Ontario's COVID-19 science advisory table has previously recommended the shift, saying distributing shots based on transmission rates rather than age groups would rapidly bring down the number of hospitalizations and deaths.
