Petition Demanding Tax Deadline Extension Launched

Ottawa accountant starts petition to change the tax filing deadline to June 15

An accountant from Ottawa has started a petition, calling on the federal government to extend the tax deadline.

Eric Saumure says the federal public service strike has reduced staff for a Canada Revenue Agency helpline, forcing some callers to wait hours for assistance and impacting their ability to file on time.

He also says this is problematic for low income people who don't have an accountant who can answer questions for them.

Saumure is asking the federal government to extend the tax deadline from May 1st to June 15th in light of the strike.

Over 150,000 federal public service workers with the Public Service Alliance of Canada are on strike, while talks continue between the union and the Treasury Board.

The main sticking points are wages and work flexibility.

Meanwhile, the CRA has said tax returns filed digitally will be automatically processed "without delay."
