The Red Cross has shared some tips on how to keep pets safe during the summer
The summer season kicks off tomorrow, and the Red Cross is reminding pet owners to help keep animals safe during the hot weather.
The organization says extreme heat can be dangerous, and you should never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes.
You're also advised to exercise with your pets in the early morning or evening hours, and walk them on grass so hot surfaces don't burn their paws.
If your dog is outside, you should make sure they have access to shade and cool water, and keep them away from the grill if you're barbecuing.
As well, dogs with short noses or snouts, like a boxer or bulldog, or dogs with a thick coat, are prone to heat stroke.
Signs of heat stroke can include the following:
- Heavy panting and unable to calm down, even when lying down
- Brick red gum color
- Fast pulse rate
- Unable to get up
