Dan Patterson now owns a key to the City of St. Catharines. The Niagara College President was honoured at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on Friday, ahead of his retirement next year.

He is leaving behind a 25-year legacy. Enrollment has tripled over that time and more than $300-million has been invested into the campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Mayor Walter Sendzik says Patterson has made quite the impact over the years.

"Dan has been a passionate and energetic champion of Niagara. Through his infectious energy and passion, Dan has inspired generations of students, entrepreneurs and local leaders to pursue their dreams. He has left an indelible mark on Niagara College and our entire community. On behalf of the City of St. Catharines, congratulations on a remarkable career. We thank you for your leadership, vision and commitment to Niagara."

Only a handful of people have received a key to the city; including Norm Foster, Edward Burtynsky, Jack Lightstone, Tom Rankin, Robert Cooper, Fergie Jenkins, Mary Ann Edwards and Rosemary Hale.
