Parking Fines On The Way Up In Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls city councillors will debate whether to raise parking fines when they meet virtually this afternoon.

It would be the first rate hike since 2000.

City staff in their report noting because of the relatively low parking fines, visitors will take their chances and park illegally because the fine is much lower than the amount they would have to pay for special event parking or hotel parking rates.

Staff also noting the increase will help generate an additional $35,000 in revenue to the parking budget.

Under the proposed change, parking penalties would increase to between $30 and $90 depending on the infraction.

The most common fines, for overnight parking on city streets or in front of an expired metre, would increase to $30.
