Pandemic Loan Repayment Worries Councilling Service

Service Chair urges government to help non-profits and small business to survive

A dire warning from a Hamilton based non-profit councilling service its doors will close if government doesn't back off on repayment of pandemic loans.

Sarah Warry is Chair of the Board of Directors for the Bridge, which uses grants and donations to help people who've been released from prison, and those suffering from addiction.

She's very concerned for what lies ahead, adding the problems they face are the same as small businesses.  "With the government, they're coming out of one side of their mouth and saying 'We know these services are good for people', then at the same time saying 'We don't care, give us this money.  People should be doing fine because they're open and running' and, it's like, no."

She says she's reached out to area MPs, adding many people are out of touch with what's really going on.

The need for public donations to stay open keeps growing.

"Even where you're down at in the Niagara region, we have so much homelessness, so much mental health, so much addiction, people living on the street, and it's like, we can't give another blow to these people when there are certain services and they can readily walk in and get help," she says.

She's hoping for enough donations that could lead to them just being required to pay 40,000 of a $60,000 loan, by year's end.
