OPP Reminding Snowmobilers to Stay Away from Frozen Water

OPP say about 40 percent of snowmobile fatalities occur on frozen lakes and rivers

The Ontario Provincial Police and its Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are reminding snowmobilers to be cautious while riding.

Officials say the milder winter means more risks for snowmobile riders who are considering riding on frozen waterways.

About 40 percent of OPP-investigated snowmobile fatalities over the last ten years have occurred on frozen lakes and rivers.

According to the OPP, speeding, driving too fast for conditions, and alcohol or drug impairment are the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities, and riders should be mindful of these and other risks.

Currently, most OFSC trails are unavailable, and snowmobilers should only use ones that are open.
