OPP Reminding Drivers to be Safe this Long Weekend

The OPP will be out on patrol this long weekend, looking for drivers not following the rules of the road

Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents to drive safely on the roads this long weekend.

Last year, 359 people died on OPP patrolled roads, and officers will be out in full force through the Victoria Day long weekend to prevent more fatalities.

"Aggressive driving, speeding has been the number one killer for many years", says Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. "We've seen it all too often from cars and motorcycles. Now we have warm weather, so we obviously have all of the other vulnerable road users out there."

In addition to aggressive driving, Schmidt says impaired driving, distracted driving and lack of a seatbelt are also big areas of concern.

He offers some advice to anyone who plans to have a drink or smoke cannabis this weekend.

"Mixing cannabis or alcohol or drugs (with driving) is a deadly combination. If you're going to be engaging in that kind of consumption, you better have a plan before you start drinking or smoking so you know how you're getting home."

Schmidt also reminds you to bring an emergency kit, flares, a spare tire and tools in case you run into problems on the road.
