NDP Leader Marit Stiles makes stop in Welland

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles was in Welland today, advocating for increased access to public health care across Ontario.

She was joined by Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch and Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates.

"The Ford government is making a clear choice to withhold billions of dollars in health care spending," said Stiles. "We could be funding solutions in public health right now - instead, Ford’s decision is creating a staffing crisis in our health care system that he has no interest in fixing. Frontline health care workers are concerned about the impacts this will have on their community - and I share those concerns."

Effective Monday, Niagara Health's site in Welland will no longer be available for after-hours emergency surgeries.

Patients requiring surgeries after hours will be sent to Niagara Falls or St. Catharines.

Earlier this month, Burch launched a petition to save full services at the site.

Niagara Health has said the hospital system is suffering from a staffing shortage, and the change will only impact about six percent of patients.
