Ontario Investing in Construction Training and Mentorship Programs for Local Women and Youth

Women and youth interested in working in construction are about to get some help from the province.

Ontario is investing over $560,000 to offer training and mentorship to help prepare up to 60 youth and women for careers in construction and manufacturing.

The funding is meant to help offset a projected shortage of over 31,000 workers in these fields over the next decade.

Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton says this is one innovate solution designed to help people get back to work during the pandemic.

"Women and young people have been especially vulnerable to job losses as a result of COVID-19. With free on-the-job training and mentorship, this new program will give them a much-needed hand up, and make sure businesses in the Niagara region have the workers they need to recover from the pandemic."

The project is being led by the YMCA of Niagara, and it will connect female and youth workers with highly skilled mentors working at manufacturing and construction businesses in Niagara.

Participants can expect to receive employment coaching, as well as carpentry, welding and machine operating training.
