Ontario ER's Facing Critical Staff Shortages Ahead of Long Weekend

Long weekends traditionally see spike in ER visits

If you're travelling this long weekend to other parts of the province make sure you know the status of the area's ER.

An Ontario nursing union telling CTV that at least 14 hospitals will be impacted by closures across the province this weekend as facilities deal with staffing shortages.

The Bowmanville Hospital says it is temporarily closing its critical care unit as it struggles with staffing shortages.

Lakeridge Health says staff from its Bowmanville facility will be consolidated at critical care sites at its Ajax Pickering and Oshawa hospitals.

The Seaforth Community Hospital in southwest Ontario's Huron County also announced it will close its emergency room overnight because it's running short-staffed

Long weekends traditionally see more visits to local emergency rooms.

Last week, Niagara Health reported longer wait times and delays in service across all its sites due to severe staffing shortages and increased demand for services due the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Niagara Health has over 600 job vacancies to fill and is struggling to fill those due to limited availability of trained healthcare workers across the province and country.
