Program looks to provide recovering addicts with more long term assistance

Niagara residents struggling with addiction now have another tool to help them succeed.

Nomina Wellness has introduced its new Social Recovery Housing Model, which looks to provide longer-term assistance to those who are recovering from alcohol or drug addiction.

The program looks to provide increased support to in-patients in transition and out-patients looking to continue their recovery.

Lisa Klco, Director of Clinics, says about 90 percent of recovering addicts relapse within their first year of sobriety, and this program is looking to address that.

"What we find is that when folks go into in-patient, they're in these beautiful, robust programs, and oftentimes, they've got this whole community of people doing the work around them. But it's short term, and then they go into their primary care environment, or back home, they try to do it on their own, and they really struggle."

Klco adds Nomina's approach can be individualized to the person's needs.

"We have an opportunity to make program individual for the specific needs of our humans. In that regard, we can have day programming where they're attending community clinics or attending evening meetings, depending on what their needs are. We can encourage and support them in doing resume writing, getting nutritional services, getting cooking classes, having various counselling support services."
