Work will focus on sections damaged by recent extreme weather

Niagara Parks is restoring the breakwall in Fort Erie, as well as part of the Niagara River Recreation Trail.

Officials say parts of the breakwall north of the Peace Bridge have been damaged by extreme weather.

As part of the $1.3 million project, a protection strategy will be created to improve the resiliency of the Niagara River shoreline.

The agency says the strategy will look at reducing the impact of frequent repairs, while also ensuring amenities remain intact.

A coastal engineering consultant firm will conduct a review, focusing on historic and predicted weather events, the intensity of waves and currents, and water level fluctuation.

Meanwhile, a landscape architecture firm has been recruited to review the alignment and elevation of the Niagara River Recreation Trail to reduce the impact of flooding.

Niagara Parks says public consultations will be held to discuss the shoreline protection strategy.
