Niagara Municipalities Marking National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to be observed on September 30th.

Thorold, Welland and Niagara Falls are joining other local municipalities in marking National Day for Truth and Reconciliation this Thursday. 

In Niagara Falls, the every Child Matter Flag will be raised and then lowered to half mast at 9:00 a.m. in Rosberg Park. 

Residents are invited to attend the ceremony, which will start with a Land Acknowledgment and include a moment of silence. 

City staff will also don orange shirts, as Orange Shirt Day coincides with the holiday. 

As well, the Falls will be illuminated in orange from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. for fifteen minutes each half hour to recognize the impact of the residential school system. 

In Thorold, there will be a flag raising ceremony on Wednesday with special guest speaker Michele-Elise Burnett, President Kakekalanicks - Celebration of Nations.

The ceremony will take place at Thorold City Hall at 1:30. 

In addition, the Welland Public Library will host a free Q&A session on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Irene Goodwin and Teresa Edwards from the Legacy of Hope Foundation.
