MPPs Jennie Stevens and Wayne Gates respond after province announces $100,000 funding for Niagara Nutrition Partners

Two local MPPs are celebrating the province's decision to invest in the Niagara Nutrition Partners program.

The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services has announced a $100,000 investment.

The program provides support for student nutrition programs in elementary and secondary schools, as well as community based programs.

The news comes after MPPs Wayne Gates and Jennie Stevens raised concerns about funding shortfalls.

"This news proves that anytime we raise our voices and work together, we can get results," said Stevens. "When I talk to the incredible volunteers who run these programs and children that use them, it’s crystal clear that they need our support. I credit the Minister for listening and taking action, and I hope that he will recognize that these programs are still in shortfall, and the work doesn’t end here."

In April, Gates and Stevens spoke about the organization at Queen's Park, noting it had it had to halt 16 food programs that serve 24,000 students every day.

While they welcome the news about the new funding, Gates says more needs to be done.

"Children shouldn’t be hungry in the classroom and I’m happy to see that the province has listened to our concerns and stabilized funding for the remainder of the school year," said Gates. "Our advocacy doesn’t end here - we will continue working with the Minister to ensure sustainable funding is achieved for the next school year. It should have never come to this - our children deserve better."
