Niagara Falls Speed Limit Could Drop

Council has directed city staff to look at 40km/hour option

There's a chance you'll see a reduction of speed limit in residential areas of Niagara Falls, from 50 to 40kms an hour.

The idea was brought forth by Councillor Mona Patel, with her colleagues all voting with her for city staff to research the implications.

"This is more complex than rather just changing the speed limit... So, it's going to take a little while to look into this.  We have Mr. Nichols and Matthews [city staff] working closely with me and Councillor Nieuwesteeg," she says.

The limit would stay at 50 on main roads, while city staffer Eric Nichols added changes by the province means more signs will be needed for the proposed 40 limit.  "What we would need to do is sign each and every entry and exit point to neighbourhoods, from alterial and collector roads.  So, it would actually be quite a number of extra signs," he says.

City staff will report back at a later date.
