Niagara Falls city council hearing of a new program that takes leftover food from conventions and restaurants and distributes it among the homeless.
Steven deBoer is the Mission Pastor with The Bridge, and says they're working with some city groups, but want to join with more hotels and community groups.
He says it's a food recovery project, in partnership with Montreal based La Tablee Des Chefs.
deBoer adds the amount of food thrown away is staggering. "We're not talking trays of food, we're talking rooms of food. La Tablee has a contract with a stadium in Vancouver... you can feed a whole city of hungry people with what's left over from a stadium event."
He told city council last night people on the street are resourceful and find food anywhere.
But it goes beyond that with this program. "So now we're honouring their dignity by inviting them to procure food in sanitary ways and safe ways, not just to feed their belly for the day, but to feed the city."
A number of councillors asked about the health unit, saying it can be strict with how leftover food is handled. He says they're working closely with the health unit to ensure food safety.
