Niagara Falls Fire Department Marks Fire Safety Week

Residents are being reminded to be cautious when cooking

It's Fire Prevention Week, and firefighters are reminding residents to be safe in the kitchen.

Cooking accounts for about 30 percent of house fires in Ontario.

The Niagara Falls Fire Department says you should never leave the kitchen when the stove is on, as fires can start fast.

"Accidents can happen but can be avoided by practicing fire safety in the kitchen starting with staying by the stove, keeping a lid close to slide over pot in the event of fire, keeping a clear area around the stove, and avoiding distractions to focus on the task at hand when cooking" stated Fire Chief Jo Zambito

You're also advised not to cook while drinking, and make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every floor at home.
