City councillor to bring concerns of current system, versus other options, to tomorrow night's meeting
There's a push by a Niagara Falls city councillor to review the electoral system of the city.
Lori Lococo says people have been talking to her for a number of years about their concern with the current At-large system, in which all councillors represent everyone. Some cities, such as Thunder Bay, have a combination of At-large and ward system.
She adds it's been 20 years since Niagara Falls was a ward system, but the city is rapidly growing, so she'll bring this up at tomorrow night's meeting. "There were smaller wards geographically, there were larger wards geographically, there was high populations in some, low populations... what they usually do now with wards is they break up the city by population."
The councillor adds people often ask her who their councillor is, thinking they are in a ward system.
"That our population of Niagara Falls is almost 100,000. Generally the At-large system is for smaller municipalities, and currently the Niagara Falls municipality is the largest one with the At-large system," she says.
She adds the review has nothing to do with Premier Ford's Strong Mayor plan.
