New Cigarette Warning Labels to Arrive This Week

Messages will be printed on individual cigarettes, in order to discourage smoking

New Health Canada warning labels will soon show up on individual cigarettes.

The move, which was announced earlier this year, will take effect tomorrow.

The warnings will be written in English and French, and will contain messages such as "poison in every puff."

Canada is the first country in the world to take this step, in an effort to help smokers kick the habit.

The Canadian Cancer Society says it supports the move, and this could convince teenagers not to light up.

When the announcement was made in May, then-Health Minister Jean-Yves DuClos said smoking is the country's leading preventable cause of illness and premature death.

The warnings will first be featured on king-size cigarettes, and will be sold in stores by the end of July 2024.

By the end of April 2025, the messages will appear on regular-size cigarettes and little cigars with tipping paper and tubes.
