Council greenlights 16 unit building on St. Paul Street West

St. Catharines city council has approved a new apartment building.

During last night's meeting, council gave the go-ahead to a new five-storey building, which will be located at the intersection of St. Paul Street West and Flummerfelt Street.

The move had some councilors wondering why the building was only five storeys when it's on a major street near a GO station.

Councilor Kevin Townsend says more than 16 units should be added, considering the need for housing.

However, Susan Smyth, a senior planner with Quartek Group, noted going higher would increase the density on the site and cause problems for parking.

The property has been vacant for over two decades.

It previously had a gas station, but that was demolished in the late 1990s.
