Most Drivers Compliant on Port Colborne Street

Niagara police checked for speeding on Janet Street following complaint

You may have noticed Niagara police stepping up enforcement of safety on Janet Street in Port Colborne.

Media relations officer Phil Gavin says they received a complaint about speeding, and some information from the city about safety concerns.

He points out an officer found the majority of drivers last Thursday were safe.  "It really depends... sometimes we're there for it, sometimes we're not.  It is important, though, for the public to see us there, people who travel the area on a frequent basis recognize there is the potential for enforcement."

The officer adds one person was pulled over for speeding, and three others for driving while suspended.

Even though they didn't catch many drivers, Gavin tells us it was still important to be there.  "To rely on tickets being the main indicator of success, I think is not always accurate.   Because, as the officer said, members of the public who reside in the area came to him and said thank you for being here."

Police were there during the lunch hour and after school, during which time most drivers stayed at the 50 limit.
