More Doctors Sought for Welland

Council heard the city has gained and lost doctors, while trying to recruit

Welland city council is not giving up the daunting task of recruiting family doctors.

It heard a presentation recently from Jill Croteau, a doctor recruitment specialist with the Niagara Region, who revealed many of the difficulties faced such as the city losing 19 doctors last year, even though it gained 19 during the same time.

Mayor Frank Campion said he'd talk to the region about better cooperation with municipalities, as he could only speculate why the region doesn't give doctors directly any financial help.  "I think they're looking at their responsibility from a higher level in marketing, in trying to find out where the doctors are and how we can attract them.... they are paying for hospitals."

Council heard there are some cities in Niagara that do offer financial help to doctors.

Jill Croteau pointed out the region does spend money on trade shows and other methods.  "The region does have a budget, a lot of that is for salary, for myself.  They do have a budget that was just increased in the past year, but a lot of that is used for marketing."
