Mayor Stands by Israel/Hamas Decision

Mat Siscoe says supporting certain conflicts need to stay out of council

St. Catharines' mayor is not budging from his stance that Niagara Regional council not support a ceasefire in the Israel/Hamas war.

Mat Siscoe's recent decision to pull a motion at the region in support of a ceasefire was supported in a vote of 26-2.

At city council, he addressed the Ukraine conflict with Russia.  "While I have been stedfast in my support for Ukraine, it is not appropriate for it to enter this chamber, or the Regional council chamber.  We need to represent the entire community, and not pick sides."

A large crowd at regional council chanted "shame" and "ceasefire now" after the vote.

"All of us have the capacity to lend our names, and support the causes we believe in.  I encourage all councillors to identify those causes, but we need to be sure to keep it out of council meetings, and we can't allow issues we have no control over to hijack our meetings," he says.

The mayor added the difference is in the amount of division in the community.
