Loblaws to Open 38 New Shoppers Drug Mart and Grocery Stores this Year

The chain announces plans to open 38 new locations and renovate about 600 stores

The country's largest grocer is looking to expand.

Loblaws says it plans to renovate hundreds of locations and open 38 new stores this year.

About two-thirds of the new locations will be Shoppers Drug Mart stores,

As Canadians continue to face higher prices at grocery stores, the chain says it also plans to focus on discount supermarkets in underserved communities and increasing pharmacist-led health clinics.

"For decades, Loblaw has made significant investments in the Canadian economy - creating jobs and opportunities in our company and others," said Galen G. Weston, President and Chairman, Loblaw Companies Limited. "By growing and innovating, we are advancing the priorities that matter to customers: outstanding shopping experiences, affordable options, and support for their health and wellness. This investment lives up to our purpose of helping Canadians live life well."

The changes are expected to cost about $2 billion and add about 6,000 new jobs.
