Lincoln Reduces Speed Limit

Urban areas at 40

The Town of Lincoln has reduced the speed limit on local roads within urban areas.

The speed limit has been reduced from 50 km/h, to 40 km/h.

"This decision reflects our commitment to the safety and well-being of our community," said Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. "By making this speed limit reduction permanent, we are taking a significant step toward creating safer streets for all residents and visitors alike."

In 2021, council asked for a plan to reduce speed limits.

This led to a pilot project to test the effectiveness of lower speed limits.

The study found there was a lower risk of collisions, and an increase in pedestrian survival rates.

According to an online survey, about three quarters of Lincoln residents were satisfied with the change.

The Town plans to add more 40 km/h speed zones later this year, and looks to complete the transition for all local roads by the end of next year.
