Hospital Workers in Ontario Given Pay Increase After Bill 124 Deemed Unconstitutional

Hospital workers in Ontario will get a pay increase of 3.75 percent this year and 2.5 percent next year

Ontario's hospital workers will soon get a wage increase.

Hospital staff, not including registered nurses, will get an extra 3.75 percent this year and 2.5 percent next year.

In November an Ontario court ruled that Bill 124, which capped salary increases for healthcare workers at one percent a year for three years, was unconstitional.

As well, arbitrator William Kaplan awarded an additional $2 an hour for registered practical nurses and increases to benefits and shift and weekend premiums.

However, the SEIU Healthcare Union says these increases still fall short of what is needed to keep up with inflation and aren't enough to attract more healthcare workers to the province.

Contracts for the workers in the SEIU and the Canadian Union of Public Employees expired in 2021, but they negotiated the right to reopen talks if Bill 124 was ruled unconstitutional.

A report from the province's Financial Accountability Office suggests the province has spent an extra $1 billion on healthcare, after the bill was found unconstitutional.
