Homeless Emergency Declaration Shuffled

Regional council wants more detail on why Emergency should be changed to Crisis

Niagara region's health and social services committee will have to dig deeper to justify dropping the State of Emergency over homelessness and addiction.

Council as a whole voted last Thursday on Councillor Wayne Redekop's idea to send a motion to end the Emergency back to where it started.

"Be referred back to the public health and social services committee, to provide data to council to justify downgrading the State of Emergency to a crisis," he said.

Councillor Pat Chiocchio remained stedfast for the Emergency.  "In an emergency, we have to do it, when it's a crisis, we don't have to do it.  So, I'm saying until we see numbers have gone down, I know we're still in an emergency."

Councillor Laura Ip feels the Emergency causes needless work for staff for work already being done.

Council agreed with Mayor Mat Siscoe's idea to change the word "downgraded" to "change", saying the word "downgraded" is too subjective.
