E-coli bacteria detected at Nickel, Sherkston and Cedar Bay Beaches

Nine Niagara beaches have been posted by Niagara Public Health as unsafe for swimming ahead of the weekend.

The majority of the posted beaches are cited for e-coli bacteria.

High levels of bacteria have been detected in Lake Ontario closing a number of beaches throughout the GTA as well.

Here in Niagara, Sunset beach in St. Catharines and Nelles Beach in Grimsby are among those impacted.

Along Lake Erie a number of popular beaches are posted including Nickel, Sherkston and Cedar Bay beaches in Port Colborne.

E. coli are a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
