Health Care Scholarship Starts in Summer

Niagara Health Knowledge Institute hopes students will stay in Niagara

Two post-secondary Niagara students will spend the summer learning to advance critical health care research, thanks to a new scholarship.

The Niagara Health Knowledge Institute has partnered with Niagara College and Brock University, providing $10,000 to each student.

The Institute's Executive Director Jennifer Tsang says this summer is the first.  "We want them to experience what it is like conducting research in a community hospital, and most importantly we want them to learn more about the health care system in the Niagara region."

She says students will help with data collection, date entry, and presenting study findings or updates.

She also says it'll teach students to better understand the experiences patients go through, as well as helping older people.

"The other portfolio that we are very strong in, and are known internationally, is the portfolio whereby we work on expanding research capacity at community hospitals across the country."

They hope these positions will help ease the shortage of health care workers in Niagara.

There's also been a lot of interest expressed in this program.
