Hamilton Has New Policy on Roadside Memorials

Time limit on how long they can stay up

Hamilton city councillors have approved a time limit on roadside memorials.

Under the new policy the memorials can only stay in place for 18 months.

The new directive also include what materials can be used to make a memorial, rules for maintenance and where they can be located.

But several parents who lost children in car crashes in the city sent letters to council saying 18 months is too short.

In a note to council, Jennifer Mann, whose daughter was killed in a collision in 2020, writes "One of the biggest worries of grieving parents is that their child will be forgotten. Memorials help to keep their memory alive."

Councillors defend the move saying the goal of the policy is to keep passing motorists and visitors safe.
