Gates Resisting NHL Pride Tape Ban

Wants the government to write to the NHL

Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates is criticizing the NHL's decision to ban Pride tape on hockey sticks.

Earlier this month, the league sent a memo out to players about the ban.

This follows a decision made in June, barring players from wearing themed jerseys during warm ups.

The league has said with several players refusing to wear Pride jerseys, the controversy was a distraction from the work teams did in their communities.

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has also said the decision was made to avoid making some players uncomfortable.

Gates is calling on Neil Lumsden, the province's Minister of Tourism and Sports, to write to the NHL about this.

"We have two teams in the province of Ontario disagreeing with the NHL's policy that hurts the LGBTQ community," Gates says.

"It flies in the face of the league's message that they support players' choice. More importantly, it sends the message to kids in our community and across the province that they are not welcome playing hockey."

Players including Morgan Reilly of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers have also spoken out against the move, calling it "unfortunate."
