Future of EJ Freeland Community Centre Finalized

The future of the EJ Freeland Community Centre is now set in stone.

The YMCA of Niagara will cease all operations on February 21st, and it will leave a wide range of equipment at the facility.

The Town of Fort Erie will take over ownership of the building and will start renting it out to the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara on April 1st.

Both agreements were just recently finalized.

Mayor Wayne Redekop says it should be a smooth transfer, that will benefit the Town in the long-run.

"Our residents expressed a strong desire to keep the EJ Freeland Community Centre open and for recreational programming and services to continue. This agreement, and the one with the Boys and Girls Club, gives us the ability to ensure that current and future residents will continue to have access to programs that are critical to their health, recreation and well-being."

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Joanne Turner says fitness, aquatics and recreational programs will be available next spring.

More programming information will be available in the New Year.
