Fort Erie to Review Fence Heights

Town council will focus on fences near bodies of water

Fort Erie town council will be looking at its by-law concerning the height of fences not only at Lake Erie, but all bodies of water.

Councillor Ann-Marie Noyes says there's been concern along parts of Black Creek after new neighbours moved in.

"There's been two occasions where they put up 5'8 fence, pretty much right up to the water's edge... this has caused some concern among the neighbours because they do pay for the river view," she says.

She's asking for town staff to look into perhaps 3 foot limits on fences.

The councillor recalls about two years ago when the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority blocked taller fences due to a flood plain.  "Just a few lots down, no longer in the flood plain, whatever the flood plain area is, [Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority] had no objections.  And the way our by-law states, is that if the NPC doesn't have a concern, then the fence can be a regular fence height."
