Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop says Niagara Health should have met with Town representatives before temporarily shutting down its urgent care centre.

Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop is speaking out against Niagara Health's decision to temporarily close the Douglas Memorial Urgent Care Centre.

In a release, he says while the Town supports Niagara Health's efforts to meet the demands posed by the pandemic, Town representatives should have been consulted about the decision to temporarily shut down the Urgent Care Centre.

"We have made ourselves clear with Niagara Health - we don’t support the temporary closure of our urgent care centre. We don’t support not being consulted before they made the decision. And, we expect Niagara Health and other provincial authorities to get our urgent care centre back up and running as soon as they are able to secure staffing levels in their emergency rooms," Redekop notes.

Niagara Health says the centre will temporarily close tomorrow night at 11 PM, due to staffing shortages.

Physicians and nurses will be re-deployed to other Emergency Departments, including St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.
