Fort Erie Hospice Construction Costs Soar

Hospice Niagara Executive Director Carol Nagy presents to council

Hospice Niagara says the impact of the pandemic sent costs up by millions

Hospice Niagara is very concerned about a ballooning price tag for a new site at Gilmore Lodge in Fort Erie.

Executive Director Carol Nagy brought her thoughts to town council this week, as the beginning of construction is set to start next year.

She revealed the initial cost was about $8-million, but COVID's impact on construction costs blew that up to $14-million.  "We have a public contribution target of $9.5-million, we're 7.7-million there, which is wonderful... this community has really stepped up.  And along with Hospice Niagara's own contribution, we're 82% to completion."

She adds if they're not able to get the needed money, part of the construction will not be done.

"I will be going back to the Ministry of Health, who've been incredibly supportive of these builds.  However, it's a tough ask to the ministry to come to the table again to provide more money on top of the $2.6-million they've already provided," she says.

She adds the need for hospices in Niagara will continue to grow as the population of the region grows.
