Fort Erie Council Discusses Noise By-Law

Council plans to ask for your input on shaping by-law

Fort Erie town council has voted to seek public input on its noise by-law upgrade.

It'll be putting that on its website where you can offer your thoughts.

Last week councillors discussed possibly using decibel meters, as well as dealing with false noise complaint calls, and balancing when to allow town construction.

Councillor Noyes pointed out this by-law isn't just about noise.  "This has everything to do with littering, lighting, defecating, urinating, spitting and everything else.  This is not just a noise by-law, nuisance is in there too, we can't lose sight of that."

Mayor Redekop added it's important for public input as they'll need to sort through any conflicting views offered by the public.

Councillor Christensen asked about the decibel machines that measure noise.

Director of Planning Alex Herlovitch said it's something to consider.  "There would require training [for city staff] and then we would have to maintain those decibel readers.  They would have to be calibrated on a regular basis to ensure they are accurately reading the noise levels."

The councillor added her research revealed the machines are not too expensive.
