Ford Says Federal Study Won't Slow Down Housing Development Plans for Greenbelt

Federal government plans to launch study assessing Rouge National Urban Park, which is next to Greenbelt lands the province plans to use to develop housing

Premier Doug Ford says the province's plan to develop housing on the Greenbelt will not be slowed down by an environmental study the federal government plans to launch.

According to the Toronto Star, federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault plans to conduct a study on Rouge National Urban Park, which is next to part of the Greenbelt lands on which the province plans to build housing.

The study will look at the biodiversity, ecological connectivity and other natural features of the park.

Ford says since the park is near the land set to be developed, not part of it, he's not worried about the study.

Currently, Ontario's auditor general is examining the financial and environmental implications of the development plans, which are part of the province's goal to build 1.5 million homes within the next decade.

As well, the province's integrity commissioner is investigating a complaint made by NDP leader Marit Stiles.

Stiles says she made the request due to the "curious timing of recent purchases of Greenbelt land by powerful landowners with donor and political ties to the Ontario PC Party."
