Ford Announces COVID-19 Milestone, Addresses Niagara Concerns

The province has announced that the first round of vaccinations have been completed ahead of schedule in all long-term care homes in Toronto, Peel, York and Windsor-Essex.

Premier Doug Ford says that this is the first of many victories against the virus.

"We are making steady progress, but we will not rest until the residents and staff of every long-term care home and all Ontarians have had the opportunity to get a vaccine."

When asked why Niagara didn't qualify as a hot zone, Minister of Long-Term Care Merrillee Fullerton said that the province remains committed to serving the people of Niagara.

"We are continuing to support the long-term care homes in Niagara, working with the medical officers of health, public health units, local hospitals, working with every tool to support the homes there."

Minister of Health Christine Elliott says that the vaccine rollout plan was originally designed with the first four hot spots - Toronto, Peel, York Region and Windsor-Essex County - in mind.

She went on to say that Niagara is receiving vaccines, and the prvincial government is pushing for more vaccines for Ontario.

When asked whether a Moderna shipment intended for Niagara had been diverted elsewhere, Ford passed the mic to General Rick Hillier.

Hillier said that this has been happening all over the province to ensure that the places that need vaccines the most get them.

"It's not a matter of taking one from one place and giving to another, it's a matter of ensuring that the allocations go to those places that need them first in order of priority."
