The Competition Bureau says the country's grocery sector needs better competition
The Competition Bureau says Canada's grocery sector is controlled by only a handful of giants, and that needs to change.
The federal watchdog released a study today, showing in recent years, the largest grocers have increased profits made on food sales.
Last year, Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys reported a total of over $100 billion in sales and $3,6 billion in profits.
The Bureau argues more competition will help keep the price of groceries down.
It suggests an innovation strategy to support new grocery businesses and introducing unit pricing requirements.
It also recommends governments encourage the growth of independent grocers and allow international businesses to enter the market.
