Federal Government Considering Fast-Tracking Immigration Applications From Syria, Turkey

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says applications from people in earthquake zones may be fast-tracked

The federal government says the country may fast-track immigration applications from people in the earthquake zones of Syria and Turkey.

Two major earthquakes hit the countries on Monday, killing over 19,000 people and injuring 64,000 more.

Thousands of buildings were toppled, leaving thousands more homeless and struggling to access necessities like food, shelter and water.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says his department is examining the impact on immigration applicants already in Canada's system to see what else can be done.

Yesterday, Canada deployed a disaster assessment team to see how the country can provide further assistance.
