Expect More Community Safety Zones

Niagara Regional Council will vote next week, with photo radar part of the plan

Another 12 Community Safety Zones could pop up in the Niagara region if Regional Council votes that way next week.

The Public Works Committee just voted to add them to the current 13 that exist.

St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe says he can think of more that could be added.  "I can think of 6 or 7 St. Catharines locations of the 25... I could triple that without too much difficulty, and I have no doubt, at least in the short term, you would derive quite a large amount of income.  The goal, obviously, is to change patterns and we want drivers to drive more safely in those areas."

The idea is to get them working in time for school.

Photo radar is part of the plan, but those would be used at the current sites.

Councillor Tom Insinna wanted to know about photo radar tolerance, such as someone driving 5, or 10kms over the speed limit, and if the driver would be ticketed.

Director of Transportation Frank Tassone said 1km over the limit is speeding.  "There is a tolerance, and we are unaware of what that tolerance is. That gets set up by the vendor.  We prefer not to know what that tolerance is, so that we don't get into questions like this where we give residents, and councillors and so on false expectations that they can go over."

The full regional council votes on the Community Safety Zones next week.

The list of the proposed 12 are for: Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, 2 for Niagara Falls, Pelham, Colborne, 3 for St. Catharines, one for Thorold and one for Welland.
