Eclipse Bit of a Full Moon, But, It's Not: Astronomer

Pictures from John Nemy

Canadian astronomer has a free multi-media show tomorrow night at Meridian Centre

We're getting an impressive picture from a Canadian globe trotting astronomer of what Monday's eclipse is likely to show.

John Nemy, who lives in British Columbia, says the darkness is "a bit like a full moon... but it's not... you have to experience it."

He adds when the sun is completely blocked on Monday, you might see other planets.  "Up above it, you'll have the planet Jupiter, down to the right, you'll see Venus.  So, you'll have the sun and moon, plus 2 planets, that's pretty awesome.  You'll get a sprinkling of winter stars, off to the left, you'll see a few stars of O'Ryan."

He also points to the "corona", or the outer atmosphere around the sun.

"Pearls, silver white, racing away from the either edge.  And, this is also possibly a year of solar maximum, meaning the sun could be more active.  So, you might even see a few flares leaping off the edge of the sun during totality."

You can see a free multi-media preview of the eclipse by John and partner Carol Legate tomorrow night at 7:30, at the Meridian Centre.

The Town of Pelham tells us many parts of the Meridian Centre will be open, including the presentation by John Nemy and Carol Legate, despite a transformer failure and fire last night.  The town is getting a generator to restore power to parts of the building impacted by the failure, but the rest is working.
