Number of RCMP officers available disputed
An inquiry looking into how the government dealt with the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa has heard Ontario did not take part in discussions to boost police resources.
Ottawa based officials say they asked the province to join discussions, but the province said no, with documents showing then-solicitor general Sylvia Jones believed it was a policing matter.
This comes as Premier Doug Ford said yesterday he stood shoulder to shoulder with the Prime Minister over the use of the Emergencies Act, giving greater police powers at the time.
People protesting government-mandated COVID-19 safety measures gathered en masse in Ottawa and also shut down incoming traffic along the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor.
It was also heard yesterday there were disagreements and mix ups among government officials on how to deal with protesters.
City officials, including the outgoing chief of staff to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, told the inquiry the number of officers the R-C-M-P said it had available never matched the number of officers actually available for the Ottawa police service to use.
