Day of Protest Approaches

Organizers of protest against bail laws are gathering at St. Catharines courthouse

The day is coming, next Wednesday, that organizers of a protest against bail for accused sexual offender Daniel Senecal have waited for.

St. Catharines resident and abuse survivor Lizz Emerson says they'll gather in front of the courthouse, where Senecal has a bail hearing after the assault of a 3-year old girl.

She's disappointed after the federal Liberal government voted against Conservative legislation to toughen the system, the government saying it has its own legislation.  "I feel like, and I hate to say this because I've never been much of a political person, but I feel like the Liberals just want to do this themselves.  And that's only going to waste time, and, when I looked into it [legislation online], it's doesn't make any mention of sexual offenders."

She is stressing only peaceful protest next week, and no vigilantism.

"Even if change doesn't come immediately, even if it takes us 5, 10, 15, 20 years, I'm 32-years old, and I've always wanted to dedicate my life to make change for survivors, and this is where it starts for me."
