Recommendation based on food inflation
The Dairy Farmers of Canada are asking the Canadian Dairy Commission to delay an upcoming adjustment to the farmgate price of milk.
In a statement on their website, the organization says the recommendation is based on ongoing food inflation and pressure on grocery chains to stabilize prices.
"Dairy farmers and their families are also consumers and experience the high cost of food these days. Recognizing the current level of food inflation and in solidarity with all Canadians, we have recommended the Canadian Dairy Commission delay its application of the price adjustment on milk until further notice," said Dairy Farmers of Canada President David Wiens.
Last week, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers also called for a pause on increases to milk prices.
Each fall, the Canadian Dairy Commission looks at the price dairy farmers are paid for their milk, and price adjustments are made in February.
This year, the Crown corporation's formula found prices could rise by 1.77 percent.
However, price adjustments could be made through consultations, if any major stakeholders invoke an "exceptional circumstance mechanism," which the independent grocers did.
