D.S.T. Days are Numbered in Ontario

Niagara West MPP says Ontario's 2020 law waits on New York and Quebec

The time is coming when Daylight Saving Time will be a thing of the past in Ontario.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff tells us the law is ready to be implemented, we're just waiting for New York to finalize some details on its law, and for discussions in Quebec to take root.

"The trade partnerships are important and making it easier for people to be able to stay on the same time zone is a good thing, and that would be something that hopefully Quebec will do, if they see Ontario and New York waiting for their move," he says.

The law was made official in 2020, and will move Ontario to Standard Time, all the time.

Oosterhoff anticipates New York State to make the move for 2024, after previous failed attempts.

He points to reasons why Daylight Saving Time will be gone.   "Among them being some of the safety implications around when the time change happens.  I guess there are a higher number of collisions, and it's from a time that's no longer the case, where most of us don't work in agriculture anymore, although there are some in my riding."

While Ontario waits for Quebec and New York, the MPP indicates it's also possible for Ontario to go at it alone.

As for the next time change, that happens 2 weeks this Sunday at 2am, when we move the clocks forward an hour, as Daylight Saving Time begins.
