CUPE to Refrain Commentary to Media

The union representing education workers also wants the premier to pull back

The union representing Ontario education workers is going to limit its comments to the media during contract negotiations with the provincial government.

In fact, the Canadian Union of Public Employees is calling out to the Ford government to do the same, saying comments could distract from negotiations.

CUPE, representing 55,000 education workers, resumed negotiations on Tuesday after Premier Ford promised to repeal legislation that imposed a contract on CUPE if they agreed to end their walkout.

CUPE says its only focus is negotiating a collective agreement that meets the needs of students, parents and education workers like education assistants and custodians, which it has said make an average of $39,000.
