Councils Wait for Strong Mayor Answers

Niagara Falls not the only city waiting for more clarification from the province

Niagara Falls city council is still trying to sort through the Strong Mayor power from the province.

The Ford government has handed the power over to certain municipalities in order to speed up development, especially housing.

Councillor Lori Lococo had many questions last week during council including about veto power, that city staff say the province has not clarified yet.

Chief Administrative Officer Jason Burgess added Niagara Falls is not alone.  "There's been a number of professional level calls between treasurers associations and that kind of stuff where everyone's trying to figure this stuff out.  So when we get back a clarification, I think we'll put out some hard core examples of planning matters that relate to housing."

City staff also did their best to answer other questions, including who the Mayor can delegate power to.

Councillor Lococo noted legislation enabling 2/3 of any council to over-ride the mayor doesn't work with the size of Niagara Falls council, a question Mayor Jim Diodati agreed with asking.  "I don't think it's actually been posted, is that correct, that we're still waiting for more clarification from the province?  So, that's a good question, and I'm sure all councils are made up of different numbers, and what 66.6% of whatever the number is."

The city solicitor said she would answer the councillor's questions as soon as she knows.
