Councillor Ejected from Council Meeting, Again

Tony DiMarco swears at Mayor Frank Campion in heated exchange

A rather ugly scene at Welland city council Tuesday night.

Councillor Tony DiMarco wanted to rescind a motion approving a $1-million federal grant, but the mayor said rescinding was out of order since the grant's work was already started on some park work.  Mayor Frank Campion also reminded the councillor he would be in conflict of interest over the matter.

The two got into a verbal sparring match, which included DiMarco swearing at the Mayor, who hit his gavel a few times on his table, and then called for security to remove the councillor.

DiMarco also wanted to challenge the mayor on the matter, which the city clerk said was not possible.  He also taunted the mayor to come and take him out of the building.  Campion told the councillor he was threatening him and treading on dangerous ground, and offered him many chances to stop talking.

Campion called for a 5-minute recess as security escorted DiMarco out, and apologized when they returned to everyone watching on-line.

DiMarco pointed out the report on the federal grant had a line on it which read "receive for information", so it shouldn't have been approved.
